Derek Hoy
We are really very sad to learn that Derek Hoy died in the early hours of Saturday morning, at home and surrounded by his family (his wife Christine and their daughters Jenny and Sarah) after an illness. Derek was an immense influence on nursing informatics across Europe and beyond. A true Scotsman, his passing is an immense loss to us all. Bearing in mind his heritage, it seems fitting to remember him with the Gaelic : Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís (His like will never be seen again).

Derek has left his mark on informatics, he will be remembered.
This is very sad news indeed. On behalf of HISINM I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Dereks family during this difficult time.
On a personal note i believe Dereks presence will be significantly missed in the field of informatics his balanced judgement quick wit and relaxed approach to delivering key messages on informatics development were unique. I will miss our chats and of course the music. Slan go foill a chara (Goodbye for now my friend)
On behalf of the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association, I extend our deepest sympathies to Derek’s family. May Derek’s life of passion, service, and leadership give comfort and inspiration to us all.
I feel much the loss of a valuable colleague for nursing.

A hug to friends and family
Derek was a founder of the nursing informatics movement throughout the world. He was a real expert in the field and contributed so much during our formative years at the European Summer School. His Scottish (universal) humor and musical talents enriched many evenings after the days of hard intellectual work. The community of international clinical informatics has gained tremendously and will greatly miss him.
Farewell to a dear friend.
We keep his family in our thoughts and hope you find strength in knowing how much he touched the lives and careers of so many people.

Derek’s contribution to informatics was enormous. His advice was always spot-on and given generously. His friendship was invaluable.
I will be forever grateful for his input to the Informatics module on the Doctoral Nursing Programme in University College Cork, Ireland.
Fintan is correct, ‘ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís’.
